For the twentieth anniversary of the publication of Islamic Homosexualities, Stephen Murray has written about books and movies that have appeared since its publication that provide representations of Muslims engaged in recurrent same-sex sexual relations and relationships. The Muslims are primarily North African Arabs and Arabs of North African descent living in France, but some of the Muslims whose lives are considered live in North America, Nigeria, South Africa, Turkey, Israel, Pakistan, and India.The religion of Islam is not a central concern of the Muslims represented (by Muslims or non-Muslims), though being part of families and communities defined both by other family members and by hostile outsiders as “Muslim,” an ethnicity rather than a set of religious practices, is salient for those sojourning or settling in places without Muslim majorities. Loving those of the same sex is a more salient problematic for those living where being Muslim is taken for granted, and being openly gay within Muslim communities seems impossible to most, some of whom are frustrated by it, while others work around condemnations of relations and relationships beyond official family ones.
